Michigan Family Trio Captivates AGT With Stunning John Denver Cover After Building a Massive Online Following

A father-and-sons trio from a small town in Michigan is winning hearts across America after delivering a breathtaking performance of John Denver’s timeless classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads” on America’s Got Talent.

The group, The Sound, earned a unanimous four yeses from the judges during the July 21, 2026 audition, but their inspiring journey began long before they stepped onto the AGT stage.

From Small-Town Michigan to the National Spotlight

The trio consists of Rob Mills and his sons, Levi and Jacob. Originally from Romeo, Michigan, the family now lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where they continue pursuing their shared passion for music.

Introducing themselves to the judges, the family explained that music has always been at the center of their lives.

“We’re called The Sound, and we’re originally from Romeo, Michigan. We’ve been playing together since we were little,” they shared.

Rob said he raised his sons on classic country music, helping shape the rich family harmonies that have become the group’s signature sound.

A Stairwell Turned Into a Viral Stage

Before appearing on America’s Got Talent, The Sound had already built an impressive fan base online.

In May 2025, they began posting videos of themselves singing in a hotel stairwell, using the natural acoustics to showcase their harmonies. The unique setting quickly captured attention, and the videos spread rapidly across social media.

Just over a year later, the family had amassed nearly one million followers, while their stairwell performances had generated more than 100 million views.

Levi believes their success comes from connecting with people who appreciate life’s simple moments.

“We found out there’s a whole lot of people who value the same things we do—family, faith, and good music,” he said. “We live in a fast-paced world, and it’s refreshing to slow down and appreciate the simple things.”

A Performance That Won Over Every Judge

For their audition, The Sound opened with a powerful a cappella rendition of Take Me Home, Country Roads. As their harmonies filled the theater, the audience began clapping along, creating a memorable moment that quickly earned a standing ovation.

Even Mel B, who admitted she isn’t usually a fan of country music, was impressed.

“I’m not really that big of a fan of country music, but this made me so happy,” she said. “The harmonies were just perfect.”

Howie Mandel praised the trio while joking that they held their final note so long that crew members were preparing to escort them off the stage.

“I loved it,” he said with a laugh.

Sofía Vergara called the audition one of her favorites of the season and predicted that viewers would instantly connect with the family.

“You guys being a family, the voices, everything was perfect,” she said. “I think America is going to fall in love with you.”

Simon Cowell Offers One Challenge

While Simon Cowell praised the trio’s polished performance and undeniable charm, he encouraged them to be even more adventurous if they move forward.

“I think everyone is going to like you. How can you not?” Cowell said. “That was a very safe, nice audition. Going forward, you have to take more risks.”

Despite the advice, all four judges enthusiastically voted yes, sending The Sound through to the next round of the competition.

As America’s Got Talent narrows nearly 100 acts down to just 44 for the Live Shows, fans will soon learn whether The Sound’s inspiring blend of family, faith, and unforgettable harmonies will carry them one step closer to the grand prize.
