New details have surfaced in the heartbreaking case of James “Weston” Higginbotham, a 20-year-old Auburn University student whose disappearance during a family trip to Japan ended in tragedy.
Surveillance footage has provided investigators with a clearer picture of Weston’s final known movements before he vanished in Kyoto. His body was later discovered in a remote mountainous area after an extensive search involving police, rescue teams, and local volunteers.
A Solo Walk That Sparked Concern
According to reports, Weston separated from his family after a disagreement with his mother over her use of ChatGPT to help navigate their travels in Japan. Wanting some time alone, he set out to explore Kyoto by himself.

His parents were able to track his movements through the Life360 location-sharing app, which showed him boarding a train and stopping at several stores. But concern quickly grew when his location sharing was suddenly turned off — a move his mother, Nancy Higginbotham, described as completely out of character.
“It was unlike him,” she later said.
CCTV Captures Final Known Sighting
Investigators traced Weston’s last confirmed movements through CCTV footage that showed him walking alone in Kyoto’s Yamashina district.
Authorities noted that the route appeared to lead toward a nearby forested hiking area, a detail that drew particular attention given Weston’s love of outdoor adventures and hiking.
The footage became a critical clue as search efforts intensified.
Massive Search Hampered by Severe Weather
Police launched a large-scale search operation on June 2, focusing on the rugged wooded terrain near Weston’s last known location.
More than 100 officers, search dogs, and helicopters were deployed. However, heavy rain and powerful winds caused by a passing storm system made the search extremely challenging.

Determined to find their son, the Higginbotham family organized a parallel search effort with local residents and private rescue teams, expanding the operation into areas that had not yet been fully covered.
Volunteer Team Makes Heartbreaking Discovery
After days of uncertainty, a volunteer search-and-rescue group located Weston’s body in a mountainous region outside Kyoto.
The devastating news was confirmed by his mother in an emotional Facebook post.
“The grief we feel is impossible to put into words,” Nancy wrote.
She expressed deep gratitude to the countless people who supported the family during the search, from local volunteers in Japan to strangers around the world who shared Weston’s story and offered prayers.
“We are forever grateful for the time we had with our sweet, precious Weston,” she wrote. “But we cannot begin to understand what life without him will be like.”

An Outpouring of Global Support
As the family continues to mourn, they have thanked the thousands of people across the United States, Japan, and beyond who helped spread awareness and assist in the search effort.
While questions remain about Weston’s final hours, his family says the overwhelming kindness and support they received provided strength during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death remains ongoing.
