As the investigation into Nolan Wells’ death continues, his best friend, Warren Hudson, has spoken publicly about one of the most difficult decisions he says he has ever made—choosing not to attend Nolan’s funeral.
During an emotional interview on The Officer Tatum Show, Hudson explained that he stayed away because he believed his presence would shift attention away from Nolan’s family and the purpose of the service. He also said he feared for the safety of himself and his loved ones after receiving what he described as thousands of threatening messages following Nolan’s death.
“It Was a Horrible Choice”
Hudson, who has repeatedly described Nolan as his best friend, said missing the funeral was never something he wanted to do.
“It’s horrible that I had to make that choice,” he said, explaining that the intense public attention surrounding the case has dramatically changed his life.
According to Hudson, his greatest concern was that mourners would focus on him rather than remembering Nolan.
He also claimed that the volume of threats directed at him and his family made attending the service feel unsafe.
His Most Detailed Public Interview Yet
The interview marked Hudson’s most extensive public account of the events leading up to Nolan’s disappearance on Mississippi’s Horn Island.
Throughout the conversation, Hudson again denied any involvement in his friend’s death and shared his recollection of what happened during the group’s Fourth of July boating trip.
According to Hudson, their boat began experiencing mechanical problems, prompting the group to prepare to leave the island.
He said several friends urged Nolan to return to the boat, but Nolan declined, telling them he planned to stay behind and ride back to the mainland with someone else.
Hudson also explained that it is not uncommon for visitors to Horn Island to arrive on one boat and leave on another. Even so, he said members of the group were uncomfortable with Nolan remaining on the island and encouraged him to come with them.
The Investigation Continues
Nolan Wells disappeared during the July 4 outing, and his body was recovered in the waters near Horn Island two days later.
While investigators initially indicated they believed Nolan had drowned, many questions surrounding the case remain unanswered.
Nolan’s parents have continued to seek additional answers and retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump to help conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding their son’s death.
An independent autopsy commissioned by the family did not determine an official cause or manner of death, leaving both findings pending while investigators continue examining the evidence.
A Case Still Searching for Answers
As the investigation moves forward, Hudson’s interview provides additional insight into his perspective on the events surrounding Nolan’s disappearance. At the same time, authorities continue working to establish a clear timeline of Nolan’s final hours.
