With the audition rounds officially complete, America’s Got Talent Season 21 is adding an exciting new twist that gives some contestants one last opportunity to earn a place in the Live Shows.
For the first time, viewers will get to watch the judges make some of their toughest decisions through a brand-new round called Judges’ Callbacks, premiering August 4 on NBC.
A New Chance to Reach the Live Shows
Throughout the auditions, performers received either a Yes, a No, or the coveted Golden Buzzer.
A No meant their journey ended immediately, while a Golden Buzzer guaranteed a direct spot in the Live Shows. Contestants who earned enough Yes votes advanced—but their place was not yet secure.
This season, only 44 acts will compete in the Live Shows. With 10 Golden Buzzer winners already guaranteed a spot, the judges must narrow the remaining successful audition acts down to just 34 finalists.
Fans Will Finally See the Decision-Making Process
In previous seasons, these difficult choices happened behind the scenes. This year, however, AGT is bringing viewers into the process.
Beginning Tuesday, August 4, selected contestants will return for the new Judges’ Callbacks round, where they’ll perform once more in hopes of earning a coveted place in the Live Shows.
But there’s another twist.
Instead of returning to the familiar AGT stage, contestants will perform at the judges’ own homes, creating a much more personal and intimate setting.
A preview for the new round teases the return of fan favorites including Elektro Dads, Vahtang, Butter & Grit, and Olivia Befus, all competing for another chance to continue their AGT journey.
Simon Cowell Explains the New Format
According to Simon Cowell, the idea came from one of the show’s producers, who suggested giving each judge the opportunity to invite back contestants they believed deserved another look.
Cowell immediately embraced the concept.
He said spending time with the contestants outside the theater gave him a much deeper understanding of who they are beyond their auditions.
Rather than simply watching another performance, the judges sat down with each contestant to hear their personal stories, career goals, and what the competition means to them.
Cowell explained that those conversations completely changed the experience.
“I spent about 30 to 40 minutes with each person, really getting to know them,” he shared. “It was fascinating.”
He believes viewers will also connect with the contestants on a much more personal level.
“You’re going to see a side of them you never would have seen before.”
A Performance Cowell Says He’ll Never Forget
One of the most unique aspects of the new round is the setting itself.
Instead of performing under bright stage lights, contestants will showcase their talents in the judges’ backyards and gardens—creating moments unlike anything seen before on America’s Got Talent.
Cowell even teased that one performance in his own garden became one of the most unforgettable moments of his career.
“Seeing one particular act in my garden was one of the most surreal moments I’ve ever experienced,” he said.

The all-new Judges’ Callbacks premieres Tuesday, August 4, giving viewers an inside look at how the final Live Show lineup is chosen.
The Live Shows begin August 18, when the competition shifts to America, and viewers’ votes will determine which acts continue their journey toward becoming the next America’s Got Talent champion.
