As investigators continue working to determine what happened to Nolan Wells, new attention has turned to one of the final people known to have spoken with the 18-year-old before he disappeared on Mississippi’s Horn Island.
Recent reports have identified the young woman as 19-year-old Katie McCormack. Authorities have not accused her of any wrongdoing, but differing accounts of the events leading up to Wells’ disappearance have made her interaction with him an important part of the ongoing investigation.
The Final Hours on Horn Island
On July 4, Wells, a college football player from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, traveled to Horn Island with friends to celebrate Independence Day.
According to those who were with him, the group’s boat developed mechanical problems with its bilge pump, forcing them to leave the island. They have consistently said Wells chose to remain behind because he was talking with McCormack and told them to return to the mainland without him.
That version of events was also shared by Ashlee Cole, the mother of Wells’ best friend, Warren Hudson, who said the group believed leaving was necessary because the boat was no longer safe.
A Different Account Raises New Questions
However, members of McCormack’s family have offered a different version of what happened.
Her sister, Gracie McCormack, said Katie believed Wells was preparing to leave the island with his own friends.
“Katie had a conversation and assumed Nolan was getting ready to get on the boat he came out on,” Gracie said.
She added that her sister never thought Wells intended to stay behind.
“Katie assumed the friends telling him to get on the boat wouldn’t have left him.”
If that account is accurate, it directly conflicts with what Wells’ friends have told investigators, creating one of the biggest unanswered questions in the case.
Family Says They Are Cooperating
According to Gracie, Katie traveled to Horn Island with a different group and later returned to the mainland with her brother and his fiancée.
She also said her family has fully cooperated with investigators and has answered every question asked by both law enforcement and Wells’ family.
Katie herself has remained largely out of the public eye but briefly addressed the situation in a social media comment.
“Please pray for his family and his friends,” she wrote. “This is a terrible situation all in all.”
Attorney Highlights Conflicting Stories
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is assisting Wells’ family with an independent investigation, has pointed to the differing accounts as a key issue that investigators will need to resolve.
He noted that one version suggests Wells intended to board the boat with his friends, while another says he chose to remain on the island.
Those conflicting timelines, Crump said, make it critical to determine exactly what happened during Wells’ final hours.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Authorities recovered Wells’ body in the waters near Horn Island on July 6, two days after he disappeared.
Officials have not yet determined exactly what happened after his friends left the island, and the investigation remains active.
For now, Katie McCormack is believed to be among the last known people to speak with Nolan Wells before he vanished. While her identity has answered one question, the differing accounts surrounding his final moments continue to leave investigators and Wells’ family searching for answers.
