Kelly Clarkson recently gave fans a glimpse into the personal story behind one of her songs, revealing that she once had to break up with the same person twice.
The singer shared the surprising confession during her Studio Sessions Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace on August 8. Before performing “I’d Be Lyin’,” Clarkson explained that the song was inspired by an experience she had in her own life.
“I swear to God, I’ve had to break up with someone twice,” Clarkson told the audience.
She went on to explain that ending the relationship was difficult both times, particularly because the other person seemingly struggled to accept that the relationship was truly over.

Clarkson described the experience as frustrating and emotionally complicated.
After already having the difficult conversation once, she found herself in the same position again, wondering how the other person could still be confused about where things stood.
The experience ultimately gave her an idea for a song.
Clarkson explained that people sometimes hear what they want to hear during difficult conversations rather than accepting what the other person is actually saying. She channeled those emotions into “I’d Be Lyin’,” turning a painful personal experience into music.
The singer did not reveal who the former partner was, and there is no indication that the story was connected to any particular relationship fans may know about.
